Every year I venture to the fair. And as always, I have such an amazing time. I am so happy that I was able to see Big Tex in all of his glory one last time. I know they will rebuild and he'll be bigger and better next year - but I'll miss the old Tex and his memorable style.
Super sad day in Dallas. This morning, shortly after ten our beloved Big Tex went up in flames. For 60 years he welcomed visitors into the fairgrounds - with his tremendous smile, booming voice, and mammoth stature. Now, all that is left is a skeletal frame of our iconic cowboy. The images from the fire are incredibly heartbreaking and have left a huge hole in my Dallas heart. Even though The State Fair of Texas will remain open for its final weekend - the area around Big Tex will be closed, definitely dampening the frivolity of the fair. He will be missed like an old friend.

It goes without saying that Dallas offers some seriously scrumptious beef - but I'll be honest, I'm not a huge burger fan. I do however L.O.V.E tuna burgers, and it just so happens that around the corner from my apartment is Chop House Burger, which has an amazing Ahi Tuna Burger. Piled with sushi grade tuna, wasabi mayo, pickled ginger, arugula and a nori chip (a dehydrated pressed sheet of seaweed), this is literally the best "burger" I've ever tasted.
Eat it. xoxo Once upon a time I really disliked antique malls, flea markets, and thrift stores. As a child I found them cluttered and dirty - which is odd because I didn't grow in a house that implanted that idea in my head. As a matter of fact, my mother is the BEST bargain shopper I've ever met. She just has a knack for finding hidden treasures and I guess it took 20+ years for me to truly appreciate the fabulousness that is antique malls, flea markets, and thrift stores. I stumbled across Lula B's shortly after moving downtown. Cool Stuff for Cool People? Check and double check. Located in Deep Ellum, Lula B's is filled with vintage loveliness and I could probably spend hours wandering through this two-storied gem.
xoxo Yesterday, I celebrated the thirtieth birthday of my darling friend Florence - who is behind the A.MAZ.ING blog, Made by Firenze. It is a completely fabulous personal blog about food, crafts, and inspiring "eunoia" - which translated means beautiful thinking. And Florence is the epitome of beautiful. Read her blog, it could not be cuter.
Her birthday dinner proved to be a simply sincere soiree. Recognizing Florence's love of Europe and stripes, we were all invited to Toulouse Café and Bar for dinner, and we were all asked to wear our favorite striped confection. How adorable is that?! So, I put on my favorite striped maxi dress, layered it with a sweater, and headed to a French bistro right here in Dallas. I'll be honest, I've never been to France - but I have this romantic vision of old chateaus, cobblestone streets, macaroons, and sweet little cafes all swirling with opulence and modernity. Toulouse was everything I wanted it to be - the menu, the adorable patio (perfect for people watching), and the delightful atmosphere. It was the perfect place to celebrate Florence's birthday. To another thirty years! xoxo I had a phenomenal time at the Studio Party on Saturday. We met my sister and my brother-in-law at the studio, and had a super time gushing over all the art, tees, clocks and everything Dowdy. Seriously, if you haven't checked out Dowdy Studio, you should. I've been smitten with their stuff since the Dallas Flea. I was limited to one purchase for the evening and definitely had an extremely hard time deliberating over an Andy Warhol inspired print created by Napkin Art Studios or a magnificent pirate cat slouchy sweatshirt from Dowdy. In the end I opted for the print because it could be enjoyed by both me and the hubby. Of course, I felt immediate remorse for not purchasing a Dowdy tee and was completely jealous of my sister who did...but I left with promises from Mark that he would ultimately buy me the tee and perhaps a couple of other delectable pieces - because obviously, I had my eye on numerous items. I might be having a love affair with Dowdy Studios - I literally want everything. Today is the official start of Autumn! Time for pumpkins, boots, cozy sweaters, and cups of hot apple cider. And this is seriously the perfect weekend to begin the fall season - Oktoberfest in Addison and all the hip happenings in Dallas.
I'll leave you with some pictures from our Friday evening at PARK(ing) Day Dallas and 'Til Midnight at the Nasher. xoxo PARK(ing) Day, Food trucks, Telegraph Canyon, Raising Arizona, Studio Party with Dowdy Studio and Napkin Art Studios, Green Fest, The Cowboys...They’re all things that are happening this weekend! I'm super excited for the merrymaking to begin! So liven up your weekend with a whole lot of fabulously free local events!
Build a greener city at the Dallas Green Fest. Hang out with some serious cool people at the Studio Party. Head downtown as parking spaces are temporarily transformed at PARK(ing) Day Dallas. Catch a movie and Telegraph Canyon at 'Til Midnight at the Nasher. Walk around the galleries all night at Late Night at the Dallas Museum of Art. Don't miss anything! xoxo I had a great time at the Dallas Flea! So many oh-so-wonderful Dallas vendors in one place! Within ten minutes of entering the flea market my Christmas wish list grew - talk about feeling like a kid in a candy store! There was literally so many beyond amazing and unique goodies, it took all my might to restrain myself (and my wallet). I went with a group of my girlfriends, and we all left with some fabulous Dallas Flea finds! Below is a small collection of my favorite flea vendors: Back Alley Furniture - they take various styles of furniture and update them with a cool modern feel, and I have three chairs that are in need of some Back Alley lovin'. Can't wait to work with them! GAIA Creations - I had the privilege of soaking in some beyond beautiful creations from GAIA. Everything is handmade with care by women in need in the Dallas area, using vintage, repurposed, or sustainable materials. Love being able to give back to my community. Gemelli - offering up a lovely lineup of jewelry inspired by nature. Owner, Claire Morgan, was so much fun to talk to and is behind all of the glittery gemstone goodness. I thoroughly enjoyed her color popping stackable bracelets. She even had a few with the little stone skulls - completely reminiscent of Day of The Dead celebrations. The Urban Cottage - Seriously the cutest Airstream I've ever encountered. Filled with repurposed, refinished, and revamped vintage furniture - I desperately wanted to purchase a vintage flat file cart but have nowhere in my little home to put it. Dowdy Studio - There is nothing quite like shopping in a mobile shop! I spent most of my time in this super fabulous wagon lingering over their silk-screened tees, prints, and jewelry. I think I would be quite happy owning every single silk-screened tee. Be sure to also check out F. is for Frank, Ruthie's Rolling Cafe, and Sew Caroline!! So happy to have been introduced to all these fantastic Dallas vendors! Save the date for the third anniversary celebration of The Dallas Flea, Saturday, December 1, 2012! xoxo Dallasites, get excited! The flea market is coming to Dallas!
There is absolutely nothing I love more than local artwork, furniture, and fashion - and flea markets always offer an abundance of them. Add some food in the mix and I am sold! After reading about the Dallas Flea on Oh So Cynthia - I've been stalking the Dallas Flea's Facebook page, getting über excited about all the local vendors making an appearance at the show. I can't wait to check out this upscale indoor flea market! So take a hop, skip, and a jump over to Oh So Cynthia (a super fabulous blog about Dallas) or go directly to The Dallas Flea for more details and information. See you there! xoxo My first experience with Fashion's Night Out Dallas was a blast! I spent the evening with one of my best girlfriends - sipping prosecco, snacking on sweets, and enjoying a night completely dedicated to fashion.
We started the evening at Elements for a little pre-party - trying cocktails from Urban Taco, munching on mini grilled cheese sandwiches and tiny cheeseburgers, and of course walking around the boutique! Then we headed to NorthPark's Neiman Marcus for a giant celebration of fashion. There were so many things going on - trunk shows, makeovers, lip print readings, FNO flip books, cigar rolling & whiskey tasting for the men, individual prosecco bottles to sip on, little bags of popcorn (courtesy of Uptown Popcorn), and an abundance of gloriously beautiful people wearing some of the most fabulous fashion finds. However, it was the sweet stations on level three that completely distracted me from the fashion focus. I fell madly in love with Trailer Cake cupcakes, who have the most absurdly good cupcakes I've ever tasted. I went home with a little bag of goodies and a new bottle of perfume! xoxo |
